Charlotte MLS announces Mark Simpson as Head of Analytics

CHARLOTTE—Mark Simpson has been appointed as Head of Analytics for Charlotte MLS, the club announced Monday.

A precocious player who signed for Nottingham Forest as a teenager, Simpson has since forged a unique specialism in evidence-based performance analysis.

From final-third analysis to set piece efficiency, his use of data and analytics will provide insights to allow Charlotte MLS to make significant gains on the field.

“Our club will embrace data and analytics,” said Charlotte MLS Technical Director Marc Nicholls. “It’s very important that we use an evidence-based approach to aid the decision-making process. Mark will be integral to that vision, and brings a very practical approach to a complex process.”

Simpson has previously worked as a scout for the Seattle Sounders, and most recently served as Technical Director at the NC Fusion, where he shaped the club’s philosophy, and implemented an evidence-based approach for players and coaches.

“It is very exciting to be joining Charlotte MLS,” said Simpson. “I’m impressed with the progressive and collaborative approach of the club’s leadership and am passionate about helping to develop a team that will proudly represent the Carolinas.”

Simpson will be a key part of the decision-making process as Charlotte MLS builds its initial roster, and will take on the role of First Team Analyst when play commences in the 2021 season.
