CHARLESTON – After the loss against the Charleston Battery, there seemed to be a new lit fire under the Charlotte FC players against the Columbus Crew. It was a feisty match that resembled what you would expect with a heated rival in the playoffs.
Both teams were evenly matched and had their moments where they had the upper hand. Overall, a much-improved performance for Charlotte FC against MLS competition.
Progress
As a brand-new expansion club with a group of players together for the first ever time in their careers, the most you can ask out of them is progress. Progress that we saw in the match against the Crew.
Despite the six lineup changes for Charlotte FC this game, there was a new level of cohesion on pitch that we previously haven’t seen. The team played more fluidly, connecting more consistently with passing sequences, and was able to control portions of the match.
Everyone seemed to be more in sync compared to the previous outing against the Battery. Player positioning, their roles, and understanding between each other looked more refined.
This was especially apparent in the midfield trio. Against the Battery, the midfield seemed to still be learning each other's habits, but against the Crew they played more as a unit.
The midfield is the heart of the team, and often dictates how the team is able to play. This was apparent in the overall better performance of Charlotte FC this time around.
Still much work needs to be done, but the early signs of improvement are encouraging.
Togetherness
After a late tackle by Charlotte FC’s Yordy Reyna on Luis DÃaz in the 28th minute, DÃaz retaliated with a shove. Immediately when that happened, the entire Charlotte FC team (including the bench) rushed over to defend their teammate.
This was a demonstration of togetherness between the team. A testament of the culture that Miguel RamÃrez is building. Which is something he has stressed the importance of and is actively working to build throughout this preseason.
You wouldn't know that this team has only spent a little over three weeks together with the way they came together to defend one of their own. And few things in soccer are more powerful than a locker room filled with players who are willing to fight for each other.
Other Things to Note
- Guzmán Corujo wore the captain’s armband to start the game
- Charlotte FC Academy U-17 academy player, Chris Thaggard, made the first-ever senior team appearance of any of any CLTFC Academy product.
- Charlotte's best scoring chance came in extra time when a chaotic scramble ensued around the Crew's goal that after some heroic defending from the Crew resulted in no goal.
Final Note
One thing we can all agree on... The Newly Minted Kits looked incredible on the pitch. A kit Charlotte can be proud of. Make sure to snag one!
