Charlotte, NC (Friday, August 25, 2023) – Charlotte FC Academy midfielder Aron John has been awarded the inaugural Charlotte FC Academy Player of the Year presented by Hendrick Lexus. John, who also goes by “AJ”, was unanimously selected by his coaches and academy staff.
John will be presented his award ahead of the Charlotte FC vs. LAFC match tomorrow, August 26 in recognition of his accomplishment.
“AJ exhibits the character, professional habits and discipline needed to succeed at the next level,” said Executive Director of Academy Bryan Scales. “His performances over the course of the season, as well the example he sets as a teammate, made him a unanimous choice for our inaugural Academy Player of the Year award.”
Throughout the 2022-23 MLS NEXT Season, John embodied a professional mindset on and off the pitch. His high-level training habits and character became infectious to his teammates and helped him deliver in the biggest moments for CLTFC’s U-17 side.
“We are very proud of AJ’s recognition as Academy Player of the Year,” said U-17 Head Coach Jason Osborne. “AJ was a consistent top performer with our U-17s and embodies the main qualities of a Charlotte Academy player: humble, hard-working and continuously trying to improve every day. We know he will continue to develop as he ages out of our academy this year and phases into senior football.”
John contributed six goals and six assists in 23 matches this season and became a steady force as a box-to-box midfielder and free kick specialist. John most notably showcased his set piece ability in the MLS NEXT Cup Playoffs when he netted a late free kick against Toronto FC to move on to the Round of 16.
“AJ exemplifies everything one would want in a soccer player,” said Technical Director Bobby Belair. “His work ethic and character has made him excel in the academy ranks and helped him reach the professional level with Crown Legacy FC. We are proud to give AJ the first Academy Player of the Year award.”
John arrived at Charlotte FC from Charlotte Soccer Academy and has already made his professional debut, featuring three times with Crown Legacy FC this season.
